Strong start not enough for women's basketball in Home Opener

The Briercrest women’s basketball team hosted the SAIT Trojans Saturday, Oct. 29 for the Briercrest Basketball Home Opener.

In the first quarter, SAIT’s Stephanie Haynes scored the first point on a free throw, which was then tied up by Jill Ehman. From there Briercrest built up 8-2 and 12-6 leads in the game. SAIT started pulling closer to tie Briercrest 12-12. By 1:50 SAIT had pulled ahead by one point. By the end of first quarter SAIT had 18 and Briercrest had 12.

Martina Allen of SAIT scored two points at the start of the second quarter. SAIT started pulling even farther ahead. Around the five minute mark a number of fouls started to break out, and both teams got free throws. At 4:16 SAIT scored a three pointer. At 3:00 both teams started scoring in quick succession. By the end of second quarter SAIT had 43 and Briercrest had 24.

In the second half Briercrest started off scoring a succession of points. However, despite their strong start SAIT started pulling even further ahead during third quarter. By 1:15 left in the third the score was 71 for SAIT and 40 for Briercrest. By the end of third quarter the score was 75 for SAIT and 42 for Briercrest.

In the 4th quarter SAIT scored the first basket, SAIT continually pulled further ahead, bringing the score to 84 for SAIT and 46 for Briercrest with 3:00 minutes left in the game. Final game score was 59 for Briercrest and 88 for SAIT.

Player of the game for Briercrest was Sophie Mayerle.

Briercrest stat leaders were Sophie Mayerle with 10 points, Amy Wanvig with a game high 9 rebounds, Lauren Janzen with a game high 7 assists, Leah Hundeby with the team’s lone block and Victoria Voth with a game high four steals.
