JV Volleyball teams play well in Moose Jaw tournament

The Briercrest junior varsity volleyball teams had a great tournament at Saskatchewan Polytechnic Moose Jaw this past weekend, winning seven of eight games, including huge victories over the top ranked PAC teams.

Men’s volleyball went 4-0 during the weekend defeating Saskatoon 2-1 (15-25, 25-19, 15-13), Prairie 2-0 (25-16, 25-16 and Millar twice with identical scores of 2-0 (25-21, 25-23). Briercrest victory over Saskatoon was Saskatoon’s first loss of the year and vaulted Briercrest into second place tie with Millar.

Men’s JV volleyball head coach Carter Reimer was very excited to see the continued growth of his team this year.

“This past weekend our team had a fantastic four games,” Reimer said. “We went undefeated for the weekend, propelled by our defense and consistency. I thought that our servers did a good job of putting the opposing teams in trouble and making them play from behind the attack line for most the weekend. I also thought defensively we were working hard to get into the right position on defense which allowed us to extend plays and win some hard fought points.

Women’s volleyball went 3-1 over the weekend defeating Saskatoon 2-1 (25-22, 21-25, 15-11) and Prairie 2-0 (28-26, 25-20) before splitting with Millar 2-0 (25-22, 27-25) and 1-2 (16-25, 25-21, 12-15). Again, Briercrest’s victory over Saskatoon was the first loss of the season for Saskatoon and helped put Briercrest securely into second at 10-3 over Prairie at 8-6.

Women’s JV volleyball head coach Richelle Vigeant was proud of her team’s performance over the weekend.

“Our team showed a great deal of depth this weekend, as I was able to make substitutions at key points during a couple of close games,” Vigeant observed. “The players that were brought into the games in high-pressure situations showed great fortitude and discipline going into those situations, proving that our team has a deep lineup and some very skilled and versatile players. Our lineup looked a bit different this weekend, as Sydney Reimer played out at right side and Karly Cheredaryk stepped in to our libero position and helped us win some important matches. We were able to win a very tight match against Saskatoon, who we had only played once before, but unfortunately lost a close three-set battle to Millar. Overall, our team showed great improvement in areas we have been working on in practice, and proved that we can be successful with a number of different lineups. It was a challenging weekend and we look forward to another challenging weekend coming up!”

The Briercrest JV volleyball teams will be travelling to Millar this weekend for the final regular season PAC tournament of the year.
