Briercrest and the Red Deer Kings came onto the ice aggressive and ready to fight tonight, resulting in some injuries and a lot of penalties. Red Deer scored 47 seconds into the game with a nice tip from the right side by Dustin Gorgi with assists from Zak Hicks and Tyler Berkholtz. With 4 and a half minutes left in the first period, the Kings pulled even further ahead with a goal from Tyler Berkholtz assisted by Landon Kletke and Tanner Butler.

Briercrest started off the second period strong, especially when the Red Deer Kings took two penalties and left Briercrest with the 5-on-3 advantage. Josiah Friesen got the goal assisted by Bryton Beattie at 17:05, making the score 2-1 for the Kings. Keeping the momentum going, Briercrest got another goal quickly after with Chad Davidson making a nice pass which sent Ben Feere down the left side to get a beautiful shot on the far side, which tied up the game 2-2. Red Deer answered back with Riley Simpson getting their third goal at 12:22. With 6 seconds left in the period, Red Deer’s Landon Kletke scored, assisted by Blair Mulder and Riley Simpson, ending the period with the Kings in the lead 4-2.

The third period started off slow, which led to an aggressive rest of the period. Briercrest killed off a double minor by Arlyn Semeschuk for high-sticking; holding off the Kings from taking advantage to advance further. Later in the period, Riley Simpson also got a double minor for high-sticking Josh Peters. Briercrest pulled Dan Dekoning out of net for the last minute, which unfortunately led to an open-net goal by the Kings with 25 seconds left in the game.

Ben Feere received Briercrest’s Player of the Game for the second goal of the game, short handed, and his outstanding play on the ice.
