Briercrest fights for the win against Portage College

Briercrest and Portage College began the 1st period aggressively resulting in a lot of penalties. This provided many opportunities for either team to take an early lead. At 4:15, Jacob Baribeau scored for Briercrest, getting the first goal of the game on the power play. The goal was assisted by Kailum Gervais and Josh Peters. Briercrest held them off until Jesse Parker scored a power play goal for Portage assisted by Matt Donnelly and Ryan Groom. With 5 seconds left in the period, Josiah Friesen got the puck in the slot and wired it home top shelf. Assists were from Kailum Gervais and Dan Stollery, which left Briercrest leading 2-1 going into the 2nd period.

 Portage College answered the call in the beginning of the 2nd period when Zach Beaton scored a shorthanded breakaway goal, putting the puck just over the blocker. The goal was assisted by Ryan Groom at 4:53. This tied the game at 2-2. Kailum Gervais got Briercrest back in the lead with another power play goal from Ricky Seidel and Jacob Baribeau at 11:57. Despite Portage’s fight to get back in the game, Briercrest held them off, ending the period with a 3-2 lead.

 The 3rd period was a fast-paced and intense battle back and forth, though Briercrest consistently held the lead. At the beginning of the period, Briercrest extended their lead after Jacob Baribeau scored at 1:04, assisted by Ricky Seidel and Ben Feere. Less than a minute later, Portage had a quick response with a goal scored by Eli Jarvis, with assists from Miles Nolan and Erik Campbell which made the score 4-3. Shortly after that, Richard Cameron stripped the puck from Briercrest which resulted in a shorthanded goal at 3:33, tying the game 4-4. Jacob Baribeau scored a third goal earning him a hat trick during a 5-on-3, assisted by Josh Peters and Micah Abbott at 7:43. Another power play goal by Josh Peters was scored almost immediately, assisted by Ricky Seidel and Micah Abbott, making the score 6-4. After the power play ended, Portage College’s Daniel Chudobiak got a goal at 9:04 with assists from Jesse Parker and Carson Johnstone. During a 4-on-4, Portage came back again with Richard Cameron, who scored the tying goal from Cody Bird and Ryan Groom with less than 2 minutes to go in regulation. Briercrest and Portage College went into overtime with a score of 6-6.

 The first 4-on-4 overtime period solve nothing, so they headed into double overtime. During 3-on-3 double overtime, Jacob Baribeau scored the game-winning goal at 1:01 from Josh Peters and Dan Stollery winning the hard-fought game 7-6!

Player of the game went to Jesse Parker with one goal and one assist from Portage College. Player of the game for Briercrest went to Jacob Baribeau for an outstanding game with four goals and one assist. Come out to the game to see who takes it all at 2pm tomorrow!
