Briercrests Baribeau brings brilliance
Briercrest showed a great desire and determination for redemption in today’s game against Concordia. Briercrest had a strong start in the second game with a power play goal from Alex Bechtold assisted by Tristan ‘Hermansauce’ Hermanson at 6:07. Seven minutes later, Connor Reinson scored from the point for Concordia, with the assist by Colin Minardi tying the game at 1-1. With 10 seconds left in the first, Concordia obtained the lead going into the second from Brady Bakke assisted by David Randall and Jakob Lavoie.
Briercrest and Concordia had a slow start to the second period. With only five minutes remaining in the second, Josiah Friesen scored a short-handed goal assisted by Dan Stollery that made the score 2-2. Briercrest kept their momentum going when just two minutes later, Jacob Baribeau scored again for Briercrest with an assist from Thomas Freeman. They ended the period up 3-2.
Concordia scored their third goal at 8:08 in the final period. The goal was scored by Ian McLellan and assisted by Adam Wheeldon and Phil Dillon. With the score tied 3-3 and the period quickly coming to an end, Briercrest pulled their goalie out of desperation for a regulation win, with a minute remaining. Although Briercrest was unable to capitalize with the extra attacker, they received a late penalty which sent Concordia into overtime with a man advantage.
With three seconds left in the first overtime period, a shot from the point from Bryton Beattie went wide, but Jacob Baribeau picked up the rebound to get the game-winning goal, winning the game for Briercrest 4-3 and claiming redemption.
Players of the Game went to Ian McLellan from Concordia University and Jacob Baribeau from Briercrest College for his two goals, which included the game-winning goal.
