Posted: February 18, 2017

In their home finale, the Briercrest women’s basketball team gained redemption after a tough defeat by the Olds Bronco’s the night before. Briercrest won with a final game score of 74-63.

The 1st quarter started off with strong efforts from both teams. Briercrest won the ball off the tip off and drove a play straight to the net. They didn’t score this time around, but seconds later Briercrest scored the first basket taking the scoreboard to 2-0. Sophie Mayerle scored the second basket taking the scoreboard to a leading score of 4-0, then Briercrest scored another two baskets continuing in the lead with a game-leading score of 8-0. Eventually, the Bronco’s scored their first basket with 5 minutes left in the 1st quarter, but Briercrest continued to lead, which was a big change from their last game defeat by the Bronco’s. Bronco’s led the 1st quarter with a one-point leading score of 12-11.

The 2nd quarter started off with the Bronco’s leading as they scored the first basket, but Briercrest tailed not far behind the leadership of the Bronco’s and eventually tied the score with a score of 18-18 and 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. In this quarter, the Bronco’s played much better than the 1st quarter, which took Briercrest by surprise, since Briercrest clearly was the stronger team in the 1st quarter. Briercrest played well this quarter, also and with only a couple minutes left on the clock both teams equalized with a tie score of 24-24, until Sophie Mayerle broke the tie score taking the scoreboard to 26-24. Briercrest led with a leading 2nd quarter score of 29-27.

The 3rd quarter started off in the possession of Briercrest’s skillful hands. They immediately drove the ball to the Bronco’s end, and Sophie Mayerle sunk two foul shots advancing the scoreboard to 31-27. Bronco’s scored a couple baskets in this quarter, but Briercrest continued to lead this quarter with a leading score of 43-35. As seconds ran out for the close of the 3rd quarter, it was clear the lead of this game deserved to be in Briercrest’s skillful hands as they led with a 3rd quarter score of 52-47.

The 4th quarter started off slow as neither teams was able to score any baskets until almost a minute in. Eventually, Briercrest claimed the first point and the Bronco’s followed their lead scoring their first point and taking the scoreboard to 56-49 for the advantage of Briercrest. Both teams played well again in this final quarter, but Briercrest continued to be the stronger team who was clearly determined to gain redemption from their last game-defeat by the Bronco’s. Briercrest won with a well-deserved final game score of 74-63.

The Player of the Game for Briercrest was Lauren Janzen with a game high 13 rebounds and 5 steals to go with 2 assists, 1 block, and 12 points.
