Posted: February 18, 2017

Briercrest Hockey gave the YouthQuake retreaters yet another day of great entertainment going into game 2 of the weekend and the last game of their season.

For the second day in a row, Briercrest had another strong start. At 7:36, Josiah Friesen took a wrist shot from the left circle and put it in the back of the net, far side. The goal was assisted by Josh Peters, giving Briercrest an early lead of 1-0 against NAIT. Although NAIT had a significant lead in shots on goal with 23-4, Briercrest’s goalie Christian Mueller did an outstanding job keeping anything from getting in.

Before a minute of the 2nd period had expired, NAIT got their first goal of the day which was scored by Kyler Hehn and assisted by Macklin Pichonsky and Corey Chorneyko. To put NAIT ahead, Devon McAndrews scored with the assist by Dillon Massie at 3:26, which made the score 2-1 for NAIT. Briercrest and NAIT fought back and forth throughout the rest of the period but still ended with the score at 2-1.

Briercrest began their comeback in the 3rd period, making the score 2-2 with a goal from Jordan Harder at 8:48, which was assisted by Tristan “Hermansauce” Hermanson. The teams ended the 3rd in a tie, which took them to overtime.

It was a short-lived spark of hope for NAIT until Briercrest scored their game-winning goal just over a minute into overtime. The goal was scored by Mark MacKinnon with the assist from Tristan “Hermansauce” Hermanson to give Briercrest the victory in their final game.

Player of the Game was Nathan Park for NAIT. Luke Syrenne received Player of the Game for his 5th and final year with Briercrest Hockey. Several graduates were recognized for their many devoted years spent on the Briercrest Hockey team. Those that were recognized were Ben Feere, Jacob Baribeau, Luke Syrenne and Christian Mueller (as mentioned before).

The Briercrest Men’s Hockey team finished off their season strong, with a hard-fought battle to win against the top team in the league despite their struggles. They showed a significant amount of perseverance and had an incredible season serving the Lord and representing Briercrest. See you next year!
