Stan Peters steps up as new athletics director

Stan Peters, former head coach of men's basketball at Trinity Western University, has joined Briercrest College and Seminary as the new Director of Athletics.

"Among [Stan's] many assets, he will be bringing a passion to pursue excellence in all that we do alongside strong abilities in leadership development and mentoring," said Kyle Matthies, the Assistant Dean of Students at BCS. "We believe he will guide us to new levels in both the Clipper and Cougar programs."

Matthies has been overseeing the Athletics Department on a part-time basis for two years and is happy to pass the baton to Peters, who will work with the department full-time.

Peters joined Trinity Western University's Athletics Department in 1999 and guided the Spartans into Canadian Interuniversity Sport. During his eight and a half years with the Spartans, Peters established a record of 107-168 and was named Canada West Coach of the Year in 2003. Under his leadership, the Spartans won a Canada West Bronze Medal the same year, and they've made the playoffs every year but one since then, which is no small accomplishment in the tough Pacific Division.

Peters has a long history with Briercrest College and Seminary--as a student, a coach, the Athletic Coordinator, and later the Dean of Students and Dean of the College.

"Stan brings a knowledge of our context and present challenges," said Glenn Runnalls, the Vice President of Student Development at BCS. "He also returns to us with an enhanced set of skills that not only strengthen the development and growth [of] our athletics program, but also equip him to envision new possibilities."

"This guy is going to be great," added Matthies.

Peters will officially begin his term at Briercrest on August 1, 2008.
