Briercrest alum Joe Dueck, the founder and director of Joe’s Place, got some of the best news he’s had in awhile last week.

Joe’s Place emerged last night as one of eight winners of the Aviva Community Fund contest. They’ve been awarded $50,000 to build their much-needed kitchen.

"When I heard that we had won $50,000, I just couldn’t believe it," Joe Dueck told the Moose Jaw Times-Herald. "It seemed so impossible to win this thing. I’m a positive guy, but for small town Saskatchewan to win something like this is a really big deal."

To top it off, from all the winners from across Canada, they’ve been selected to appear on CTV’s Canada AM Breakfast with Jeff Wednesday morning from 5 to 8 a.m. Jeff Hutchison will broadcast live from Joe’s Place in Moose Jaw.

Tripmeter, a rock band from Caronport made up of Briercrest grads, will be among the guests and are slated to perform.

Joe's Place's project, called Hungry for Hope, was a contender the AVIVA Community Fund project, which gave a total of $500,000 to Canadian projects dedicated to creating positive change in their communities. Joe’s Place proceeded through three peer voting rounds and a judging round. Results were announced 11 p.m. yesterday.
